Why do people engage in therapy via video over the internet?

Availability:

Resources in remote and northern locations may be limited or non-existent, making it difficult to be able to talk to a professional. While many people travel to major centres occasionally and can see a therapist on those visits, it may be difficult to get to the therapist regularly or with enough frequency to develop some momentum.  Other people who wish to see a therapist may not be able to leave the community at all because of life circumstance.

Counselling resources in some communities may be in high demand with long waiting lists.  Urgent situations may not be able to wait for months on a wait list.

Difficulty travelling to Winnipeg:

In places where resources are limited, people may go to Winnipeg for a variety of services.  This can be difficult for counselling when ongoing regular appointments may be beneficial for a period of time.  Repeated trips to Winnipeg can be cost-prohobitive, or not practical because of lifestyle and family commitments.

Travelling to Winnipeg can be unpredictable and even dangerous during parts of the year.

Isolation:

Many who live in northern or rural communities are  professionals who move there to work may not have a wide network of support and may feel like they don't have someone they can trust to talk about what they are struggling with.

Small Community:

Others may have lived there a long time, but struggle with the ability to talk openly about very private issues in communities where it feels like "everybody knows everybody's business".  It may be helpful to talk about things with someone who has and will have no connection with you in the community--so a person can know that they won't bump into the therapist at the grocery store, the hockey rink, or a birthday party.

In small communities that are serviced by a mental health professional, there are some who won't feel comfortable using the resource because of a friendship or family relationship with the counsellor.

Geographic Separation:

Life can require husband and wife to live apart for periods of time, as one or both go elsewhere for a variety of reasons.  Military service, or work requiring travel for extensive periods of time can be stressful on a relationship, and may exacerbate problems that previously existed.  Video therapy allows the therapist, and each partner to come together in a "virtual room" to discuss and process issues even if the couple is half a world apart.
